Tangier, on the northern coast of Morocco.  This is my second time coming here and the second on a day-trip.  The whole concept seemed a bit weird (a day trip to Africa?) before my first visit in 2009, but a fairly quick ferry from Tarifa in Spain is all that’s required.

Travel tip: to make the most of the day, get the direct ferry from Tarifa to Tangier; if you go from Algeciras you’ll arrive in Tangier Med port which is about 25 miles (40km) away.

Travel tip 2: you get your Moroccan entry stamp in your passport on the ferry.  If this is still the case, find out where the passport control window is and join the queue quickly.  This way, you can spend most of your crossing enjoying the views and not in the immigration queue.

Even though the distance between the two places is about the same as between Dover and Calais, crossing from Europe to Africa is really something special.  There is so much difference, it’s difficult to put into words.   That said, Tangier has a great city centre, a wealth of history and historic places, nice people (with the possible exception of those who like to relentlessly hassle tourists from the moment they step off the ship right through to the city centre) and a sunny beach, so on the whole, what’s not to like?
